Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the IT, Energy and Consumer Discretionary sectors led shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.78%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates Ltd (TO:MAXR), which rose 7.62% or 1.29 points to trade at 18.23 at the close. Meanwhile, Kelt Exploration Ltd. (TO:KEL) added 7.28% or 0.300 points to end at 4.420 and Pretium Resources Inc. (TO:PVG) was up 7.01% or 0.67 points to 10.23 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Aphria Inc (TO:APHA), which fell 5.12% or 0.420 points to trade at 7.780 at the close. Canadian Apartment Properties REIT (TO:CAR_u) declined 4.25% or 2.01 points to end at 45.23 and Canopy Growth Corp (TO:WEED) was down 3.67% or 1.630 points to 42.795.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 729 to 411 and 105 ended unchanged.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 10.49% to 20.12 a new 1-month high.

Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.27% or 3.35 to $1250.55 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 0.89% or 0.46 to hit $51.19 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 0.05% or 0.03 to trade at $60.23 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.19% to 0.7482, while CAD/EUR fell 0.23% to 0.6584.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.29% at 97.072.
